Disinfection arches are the perfect solution for breaking down bacterial loads and viruses from vehicles entering and leaving contaminated sites.

Potentially contaminated sites

A “potentially contaminated site” is an area in which one or more values of concentrations of pollutants detected in environmental matrices are at the limit of the concentration threshold values of contamination (CSC in Italy). These values naturally vary in relation to the destination of the site considered: for green or residential areas the values are very restrictive, for productive or commercial areas the thresholds are softer. Among the potentially contaminated areas (and contaminants), include:

 

  • intensive livestock farms: these can represent a source of soil and subsoil pollution due to the impacts linked to the manure produced by animals, containing high concentrations of nitrogen as well as heavy metals. Their criticality, however, is mainly found in the potential presence of drug residues (antibiotics or hormones) and metals. An inadequate management of zootechnical wastes has consequences on both soil and water
  • heaps of materials: this section includes the former filled quarries, and the environmental criticalities linked to them by the presence of materials which by nature and origin are among the most disparate: inert waste, mainly deriving from the construction and demolition department, including, for example, production waste, bricks, plaster, concrete, bituminous conglomerate, cement waste, etc. etc.; heterogeneous waste, or materials of various kinds, where asbestos is usually found; the former filled quarries, which present a whole series of problems to be attributed primarily to the materials used for their filling, of a heterogeneous nature, and secondly to the time elapsed since filling
  • landfills: divided into landfills for inert waste, for non-hazardous waste and for hazardous waste, landfills represent a problem mainly if they do not have equipped areas (as happens in illegal landfills), which allow adequate storage of waste above ground or underground. Also in this case, the damage can be traced back to the decomposition or combustion of the materials, the putrefaction of the organic part of these materials and the emissions of harmful vapors (as well as unpleasant odors) generated by them. In the absence of adequate containment systems, the sewage favors the pollution of the subsoil and the aquifer
  • production activities: as the definition requires, these areas are designated for production processes that generate pollutants such as chlorinated solvents, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), fuels, etc. etc.

From potentially contaminated site to contaminated site

When the contaminant values ​​exceed the site-specific limits C.S.R. (Risk Threshold Concentrations in Italy), they become a danger to health and the environment and the site is decreed to all intents and purposes contaminated.
The risk becomes danger when in addition to exceeding the limit works called CSC (Contamination Threshold Concentrations in Italy), the contaminants encounter one or more migration routes, through which they spread into the environment. By spreading, the contaminants penetrate the subsoil reaching the aquifers, they can compromise the use (drinking, irrigation, etc …) of water bodies, they can be carried by the wind, they can be inhaled or deposited on the vegetation, entering the human food chain .

The management of contaminated sites: from research to solution

The management of contaminated sites starts with research. The research to better manage the potential environmental impact is developed through the study of the site in its entirety, analyzing the final objective and its method of realization, passing from the storage of raw materials to the presence of production intermediates, from the storage of products finished for wastewater treatment and waste disposal. Here it is our concern to analyze the best solutions to avoid contamination in and out of contaminated sites, especially those with high vehicular flow.
As previously described, the contaminants can be transported by atmospheric agents, first of all the wind, which cause the polluting particles to deposit not only on the vegetation but also on the vehicles entering and leaving the sites concerned. In fact, all surfaces of a vehicle exposed to the air in turn become vectors of contamination, for which adequate containment is required.
