					<div class="elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix"><p>A &#8220;<strong>potentially contaminated site</strong>&#8221; is an area in which one or more values of concentrations of pollutants detected in environmental matrices are at the <strong>limit of the concentration threshold values of contamination (CSC in Italy)</strong>. These values naturally vary in relation to the destination of the site considered: for green or residential areas the values are very restrictive, for productive or commercial areas the thresholds are softer. Among the potentially contaminated areas (and contaminants), include:</p><p> </p><ul><li><strong>intensive livestock farms</strong>: these can represent a source of soil and subsoil pollution due to the impacts linked to the manure produced by animals, containing high concentrations of nitrogen as well as heavy metals. Their criticality, however, is mainly found in the potential presence of drug residues (antibiotics or hormones) and metals. An inadequate management of zootechnical wastes has consequences on both soil and water</li><li><strong>heaps of materials</strong>: this section includes the former filled quarries, and the environmental criticalities linked to them by the presence of materials which by nature and origin are among the most disparate: inert waste, mainly deriving from the construction and demolition department, including, for example, production waste, bricks, plaster, concrete, bituminous conglomerate, cement waste, etc. etc.; heterogeneous waste, or materials of various kinds, where asbestos is usually found; the former filled quarries, which present a whole series of problems to be attributed primarily to the materials used for their filling, of a heterogeneous nature, and secondly to the time elapsed since filling</li><li><strong>landfills</strong>: divided into landfills for inert waste, for non-hazardous waste and for hazardous waste, landfills represent a problem mainly if they do not have equipped areas (as happens in illegal landfills), which allow adequate storage of waste above ground or underground. Also in this case, the damage can be traced back to the decomposition or combustion of the materials, the putrefaction of the organic part of these materials and the emissions of harmful vapors (as well as unpleasant odors) generated by them. In the absence of adequate containment systems, the sewage favors the pollution of the subsoil and the aquifer</li><li><strong>production activities</strong>: as the definition requires, these areas are designated for production processes that generate pollutants such as chlorinated solvents, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), fuels, etc. etc.</li></ul></div>
